Who we are

Maui Stream is operated by Akakū Maui Community Media, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Wailuku, Hawaiʻi. When this policy says “we,” “us,” or “Maui Stream,” it refers to Akakū.

Questions about this policy can go to aloha@mauistream.org — a real person reads it.

What we collect

When you visit the site without signing in: standard web log information — IP address, browser, pages visited, referring URL. We use this to keep the site running and to understand how it's used.

When you create an account: your email address and (if you sign up via Google) your name and profile photo. If you choose to add more, you can include a display name, bio, and avatar.

When you become a filmmaker: to receive payments, we send you to Stripe Connect, which collects identity verification (legal name, date of birth, Social Security number, address, and bank account details). Stripe stores this information; we never see your SSN or bank account number. We do see your name, address state (for our Hawaiʻi residency check), and your Stripe account ID.

When you rent a film: Stripe Checkout processes the payment. We see the amount, the film, the time of purchase, and whatever billing details Stripe shares back (typically your email and your city/state). We do not see or store full card numbers.

When you upload a film: we store the metadata you provide (title, description, cast, etc.) and the video file is uploaded directly to Mux, our video infrastructure provider, where it's encoded and stored for streaming.

When you watch a film: we record which film you rented, when, and your active rental window. We do not track which specific moments you watched.

How we use it

We use your information to operate the platform — verify you are who you say you are, process payments, deliver films, send you transactional emails (rental confirmations, approval notifications, etc.), and protect against abuse.

Aggregate, non-personal data (like “the homepage was visited 12,000 times last month” or “our top film had 340 rentals”) may be used in board reports, marketing, or grant applications.

What we don't do

We do not sell your data. We do not run targeted advertising. We do not share your information with brokers, data resellers, or marketing companies.

Who we share information with

We share only what's necessary to run the platform:

  • Stripe — to process payments and route payouts to filmmakers.
  • Mux — to store and stream your uploaded films.
  • Supabase — our database and authentication provider.
  • Resend — to send transactional email from aloha@mauistream.org.
  • Vercel — our hosting provider.
  • Anthropic — when our editorial engine writes catalog copy, it sends film titles, descriptions, and metadata (no personal data of viewers or filmmakers' sensitive details) to Anthropic's API.
  • Google — only if you sign in via Google OAuth.

Each of these processors is bound by their own privacy commitments and contracts with us. We may also disclose information when required by law (subpoena, court order, etc.).

How we keep it safe

Sensitive credentials live in environment variables, not in source code. Database access is gated by Row-Level Security. Payment information lives with Stripe — we never touch raw card numbers. Video playback uses signed JWTs that expire with your rental window.

That said: no system is impenetrable. If we discover a breach affecting your account, we'll notify you by email as soon as we can.

Your choices

You can delete your account at any time by emailing aloha@mauistream.org with the request. We'll delete your profile, films you've uploaded (subject to obligations around active rentals), and personal information within 30 days. Aggregate financial records may be retained for tax and accounting purposes.

You can opt out of marketing emails via the unsubscribe link on any such email. Transactional emails (rental receipts, approval notifications, etc.) are necessary for the service and cannot be opted out of without deleting your account.

You can request a copy of your data — email us and we'll send you what we have within 30 days.

Children

Maui Stream is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. Educational programs like Hisako Film Lab that involve minors should set up institutional filmmaker accounts; minors should not create individual accounts themselves.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we'll email registered users and update the “last updated” date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Maui Stream after a change means you accept the new version.
